When he started creating his own watch brand, one of the goals of Alexander Burhans was to combine the best possible quality product with a reasonable price and timeless design. This challenge inspired Burhans in 1991 in Fribourg to create his label a.b.art.

Even as a young man, Alexander Burhans, whose initials form the brand name, was interested in art and design. He’s especially fascinated with plain and unostentatious forms which combine purpose and aesthetics in a harmonious way. It’s quite obvious that Burhans was originally especially interested in exhibits of the well-known Bauhaus and Ulm Schools.

After graduating from dental technician school, where he acquired the technical skills, learned how to work with special material, how to shape, mould and work with precision and with smallest parts, he worked for several years in his own laboratory. It was 1989 when he actually got into the jewellery and watch business : Alexander Burhans opened his first retail store in Fribourg, with further stores to follow in 1998 and 1999. Success was immediate.
At the end of the 90’s, more than 12,000 a.b.art watches had been sold in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, USA and Japan.
