History of Rörstrand

Rörstrand has a fascinating history dating from 1726. The journey made by Rörstrand since 1726 is not only fascinating and eventful, but it reflects three centuries of Swedish history -- time during which industry developed, culture began to play a role in people’s lives, the industry came into its own and interest in colors, form and style grew in importance.

History of the brand
The history of Swedish ceramics production is interwoven with that of Rörstrand. Rörstrand was founded in 1726 and is one of Sweden’s oldest manufacturing industries with a history uninterrupted since Frihetstiden, known in English as The Age of Freedom, a period of Swedish history in the 18th century.
Rörstrand founded Arabia in 1873 to facilitate trade in Russia. In 1914, Göteborgs porslinfabrik (Gothenborgs porcelain factory) was bought and Rörstrand moved operations there in 1926 when the factory in Stockholm was closed down. After the merger with Lidköpings porslinsfabrik in 1929, Rörstrand’s relocation from Gothenborg to Lidköping began. The move was completed in 1936 and Lidköping became Rörstrand’s headquarters. Rörstrand became part of the Uppsala-Ekeby Group between 1963 and 1984 and was then bought by the Finnish company Wärtsilä Oy in 1984. In 1987 Wärtsilä Oy bought Gustavsbergs porslinsfabrik and the Finnish Hackman Group acquired the company in 1990.

Pia Rönndahl When Pia Rönndahl holds a paintbrush in her hand, it moves frantically over plates and dishes. She completed her training at the Industrial Art College in Göteborg and since 1981 she has been decorating china. Pia’s love of flowers is evident in the Sundborn and Mårbacka dinner services. Her work is displayed at the National museum in Stockholm and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Katarina Brieditis

Katarina received her education and training at Tillskärarakademin and the College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She has also worked with Rörstrand, Ikea, Svensk Slöjd and Linum. Katarinna Brieditis loves to work with different materials and methods. In the Doredo project some years ago she indulged her passion for knitting and raised recycling to new heights.
