(1915-1985) Born in Hanko, Finland. Tapio Wirkkala is known as the versatile genius of design. His contribution to design in-cludes everything from glass products to the design of banknotes and graphic art. During his career, Wirkkala has participated in many interntional exhibitions, as well as being the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki for many years. He has won a large number of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951, followed by another three in 1954.

(1894-1949) It was in 1924 that Aino Marsio went to work at architect Alvar Aalto's office. The two fell in love, married and began a long partnership. In 1932, Alvar Aalto, was beaten by his wife in a design competition. The winning entry, "Aalto glasses", also won a gold medal at the Milan Triennale. These and other items of glassware designed by Aino Aalto are made for everyday use. Their simple and yet timeless design continues to be part of our life 60 years on.
