The Update programme is uncomplicated, easy to combine and stackable. It is based on a simple sys tem comprising basics – cups, beakers, plates and bowl s in various sizes – and specials such as extra - large pasta plates and matching accessories .

Best of all: nothing has only one function. The dip bowl also serves as a saucer and lid; the café-au-lait bowl doubles up as a rice or muesli dish, and by using plates as lids, bowls make practical storage containers. The Update program is ideal for first-time buyers, because it can be added to at any time. It has received several international awards for good design.

Kahla History and Milestones -
- 1844 Christian Eckardt founds Porzellanfabrik Kahla. The first porcelain is fired on October 23rd.
- 1856 August Koch assumes ownership and Kahla soonemerges as the largest porcelain manufacturer in Thuringia.
- 1888 Kahla is established as a joint stock corporation by Bankhaus Strupp.
- 1914 Porzellanfabrik Kahla is one of Germany’s largestporcelain producers and includes, among others, the porcelain factories in Arzberg, Hutschenreuther and Schönwald.
- 1946 Kahla becomes a Soviet stock corporation.
-1952 Kahla becomes a “VEB” or state-owned operation.
-1961 The factory and office buildings on the present site are re-built, and modern tunnel kiln technology is installed. 50 percent of production is exported to east and west European countries.
- 1979 17 porcelain factories with a payroll of 18,000 together make up “VEB Feinkeramik“.The head office is located in Kahla.

-1991 The Treuhand Privatization Agency sells the nationalized company, which two years later was forced to file for bankruptcy.
- 1994 KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH is re-founded with Günther Raithel as majority partner. Following substantial investments KAHLA is able to rely on ultra-modern production technology. KAHLA production facility: then and now

- 1995 Introduction of the KAHLA hotel porcelain line.
- 1996 KAHLA operations are certified as conforming to ISO 9001, the first porcelain company in what was formerly East Germany to do so.
- 1997 Introduction of the section for customized corporate products: ”ARTVERTISING by KAHLA“.
- 1998 The ”Update“ concept achieves the decisive breakthrough. First “KAHLA kreativ“ international porcelain workshop in Kahla.
- 1999 New trade fair stand measuring 225 sq.m. presentedin Frankfurt/Main. “Survival Kit” – an international KAHLA design competition.
-2000 The Raithel family becomes sole owner of KAHLA / Thüringen Porzellan GmbH.
- 2002 Exports now account for 45 percent of sales and KAHLA products are available in 55 countries.
- 2004 International KAHLA design competition: ”Tomorrow‘s Parties“. A new, latest-generation robot press goes turnkey. Awarded the 40th design prize in only a decade.
- 2006 Landmark in the “Land of Ideas”. International KAHLA design competition “20 Dreams of Hotel”.
- 2007 With “OPUS” and “KAHLA individual” KAHLA enters the high- class segment. Awarded the 60th design prize.

According to Greek philosopher Diogenes, all you really need for drinking is your cupped hand. Yet everybody knows how different hands can be! And that is what we are interested in: Your individuality. Modern design, giving something an individual distinction that goes way beyond the actual function
called for – that is the hallmark of our brand. We develop what best suits you. Our strength stems from our wealth of practical experience. “I get my best ideas in the kitchen,” says Barbara Schmidt, one of our leading designers who are continually showered with prizes. In Barbara Schmidt and her colleagues Cornelia Müller and Mirjami Rissanen we have three international award-winning trend scouts
developing new KAHLA products.

Furthermore, by means of design competitions and workshops we are in permanent dialogue with a host of ambitious avant-garde minds. The fact that we are asked again and again by young innovative designers to enter into partnerships proves to us that we know what you want. Today. And tomorrow.

Since its re-foundation in 1994, the company has turned its vision into reality. Because innovations serve to perfect our designs. We have prioritized cost effective production technology that is likewise ecologically sound and has no adverse effects on payroll. Where technology
is concerned, as with our designs we can safely say that we are one of the trendsetters in the industry.
For example, in 1994 we were the first European company to put in place a flat porcelain production line with a fully automated handling system. Since then we have investedabout EUR 20 million in state-of-the-art technology.
And it was no coincidence that way back in 1996 we were awarded the ISO 9001 quality certification. In 2004 we successfully patented our “touch!” range, a worldwide novelty when it comes to porcelain. This velvety-soft surface invites to cuddle. So watch this space!

More than 60 design prizes in fourteen years – two numbers that underscore KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan’s success story. In 2003 alone we won an impressive ten awards, for the most part for our product design, but our marketing activities and even our packaging were also singled out for glory. We are rightly proud of the numerous red dot awards and German Designer Club prizes. And we were particularly pleased that our porcelain even picked up awards in the USA (in 2004 in the renowned IDEA competition) and in 1999, 2002 and 2005 the Good Design Award in Japan.
Against the general trend of the porcelain industry, our clear strategy “design with added value” enabled us to grow steadily.
Exports account for almost 50 % of sales, our porcelain is available in over 60 countries around the world. Today KAHLA is the biggest porcelain producer in Thuringia. Made in Germany is our commitment to the location Kahla and today we have over 20 youngsters enrolled on apprentice
schemes. Which is why we don’t just pick up prizes, but friends as well. People. Like you!
